About The Role

Technical Lead Engineer – Optical Transmission Deployment

We are seeking a best‑in‑class Technical Lead Engineer to drive the successful delivery of complex optical transmission projects across EMEA. This role combines technical authority, engineering leadership, and project delivery oversight, ensuring that customer Statements of Work (SOWs) are accurately translated into actionable engineering plans, resource requirements, and deployment activities.

The Technical Lead Engineer will act as the bridge between customer technical expectations, internal engineering capability, and commercial delivery, ensuring all projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to Indigo Telecom Group’s quality standards.

Key Purpose of the Role

  • Interpret and decompose technical SOWs into detailed engineering requirements.
  • Define required technical skills, resource profiles, and equipment/tooling required to deliver.
  • Provide technical oversight to field engineers throughout deployment, installation, test, and acceptance phases.
  • Lead the delivery of multiple technical projects, ensuring Time, Cost, Quality, and Customer Satisfaction targets are met.
  • Act as a senior technical point of escalation for engineering activities.

Core Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Review and break down customer SOWs into full engineering workpacks, deliverables, and deployment structures.
  • Define required engineering competencies, number of resources, OEM experience, test equipment, and spares.
  • Act as the technical authority for assigned projects, making engineering decisions and validating design/installation approaches.
  • Review and approve MOPs, technical deployment plans, configuration data, test procedures, and acceptance criteria.
  • Provide technical mentoring and guidance to field engineers and subcontractors.
  • Lead troubleshooting and escalation of technical issues with OEMs, field teams, and customer engineering groups.

Project Delivery

  • Execute delivery using Indigo’s Project Management framework, ensuring practical alignment between technical requirements and project milestones.
  • Produce project management and technical phase plans for each delivery stage.
  • Track progress against baseline plans, identifying early risks or deviations and implementing corrective actions.
  • Maintain full ownership of engineering documentation, quality control, and technical closure packs.

Resource & Deployment Management

  • Prepare detailed resource forecasts based on SOW requirements and engineering scope.
  • Assign engineers based on skill, experience, and certification requirements.
  • Manage engineering performance, workflow allocation, and utilisation.
  • Conduct weekly project and engineering reviews to ensure quality, readiness, and compliance.

Customer & Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the primary technical interface for all assigned projects.
  • Ensure customer inputs, technical clarifications, and dependencies are captured and actioned promptly.
  • Host technical reviews—internal and external—to validate progress, risks, and deliverables.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction through clear communication, accurate reporting, and high‑quality engineering outputs.

Financial & Commercial Responsibilities

  • Support Sales, Bids, and Programme Management with engineering input for quotes and proposals.
  • Own P&L delivery for technical scopes; forecast cost to complete engineering tasks accurately.
  • Ensure all engineering costs have PO cover.
  • Maintain revenue recognition, billing accuracy, and cost control aligned to CBS/financial governance.

Risk, Quality & Compliance

  • Identify and manage technical and delivery‑related risks from the outset.
  • Control scope creep and ensure all changes are captured, agreed, and documented.
  • Ensure full compliance with Indigo’s SHEQ processes for all engineering and onsite activities.
  • Perform technical QA checks on all deliverables, including as‑builts, test results, and acceptance documentation.

About You

You are an experienced technical leader with a strong background in optical transmission deployments. You combine deep engineering knowledge with the ability to interpret complex technical SOWs and translate them into clear resource, equipment, and deployment requirements. You are confident leading engineering teams, validating technical approaches, and acting as the senior technical authority during project delivery.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications

  • Demonstrable experience in a technical leadership or senior engineering role within a Hyperscaler or large‑scale telecoms environment.
  • Strong understanding of optical transmission, DWDM/OTN networks, and multi‑vendor systems including Nokia and Ciena (additional vendor knowledge highly desirable).
  • Ability to analyse customer SOWs, derive engineering deliverables, and define the kit, tools and resource profiles needed for delivery.
  • Hands‑on background in I&C, network build, test equipment use and power systems, enabling credible oversight of field engineering.
  • Proven experience leading or overseeing multiple installation and commissioning teams across concurrent workstreams.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage complex engineering activities under tight timelines.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to engage confidently at all organisational levels, including customer engineering teams.
  • Strong report‑writing, documentation and procedural skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Financial awareness including cost forecasting and understanding of engineering impacts on project P&L.
  • Pragmatic, calm approach when handling technical issues, changes, or unexpected events.
  • Willingness to manage and support engineering activities outside of normal working hours when required.
  • Excellent written and spoken English.

Working Environment

You will join a high‑performance, agile delivery organisation where you will oversee multiple global installation activities simultaneously. The role is UK‑based with international travel as required, and involves daily interaction with internal engineers, service partners and hyperscaler customer teams.
